RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
